Every year apple picking is one of my favorite fall activities to do with my family. With the Georgia Apple Festival coming up this weekend, I thought I’d share how we get the most out of our apple picking experience.
Every year on my fall bucket list is for our little family to go up north to Ellijay to pick apples. It’s a little ways away but the drive is beautiful, the weather is usually cooler there, and it’s fun to escape the suburbs and enjoy some countryside. Because Ellijay is known for their apple orchards (hence the Georgia Apple Festival) there are so many orchards to visit.
We always go to the B.J. Reece Orchard, because it’s super family friendly. They have a wide variety of apples to pick, and they have a market where you can buy apple products and more apples (if you want more than you can pick), as well as a bakery. We always get a fried pie, apple cider donuts, and an apple cider slushie! They have way more to do and see than just pick apples too. There are apple cannons, hay rides, a zipline (!), and animal activities like pig races, cow milking, and a petting farm (my kids’ favorite). They do charge money for most of the activities, but what I also love about this orchard is that there is a Groupon for it practically every year! So if you want the whole orchard experience, I highly suggest looking into this Groupon.
Now that we have gone and picked apples, I’m super excited to make apple pie! Be sure to head over to Ellijay this weekend or next weekend for their annual apple festival as well! And while you’re there, you should visit Colonel Poole’s for lunch or dinner…it may not look like much on the outside, but their bbq is delicious!
