{sesame street birthday party}

holiday/ kids/ lifestyle

Happy Thursday!
In less than a week, my little boy will be turning three, and it boggles my mind that I have a three year old!  I’m crazy deep in planning his upcoming birthday party, and in honor of throwback Thursday, I wanted to share a few memories of Grant’s birthday party from last year.
Growing up, my mom would put together Pinterest-worthy birthday parties for my brother and I (obviously before Pinterest ever existed), so since I was little I have wanted to do the same for my kids.  It might seem crazy, but I love planning, organizing, and throwing parties.  A lot of my favorite memories and best friendships have been from (or grown stronger because of) throwing a get-together, and adding a theme and decorations gives me a creative outlet and just takes things up a notch of awesome in my book! And now that I have kids, seeing the joy and excitement in their faces when they go to parties (or have their own) and play with their friends makes the effort (and sometimes late nights and stress) totally worth it.
I have a Pinterest board just for party ideas here, and even a few separate party theme specific boards (including one just of Sesame Street ideas and inspiration, in case you have a little one requesting Sesame Street!)
This year we are throwing little G-man a race car themed party, so I’ll be sharing that soon!

{a save vs. splurge compromise}

fashion/ lifestyle

Hello again!

I just got back from a trip visiting family, and it was jam packed with family and fun times!  Unfortunately where I thought I would have posts planned and ready while away, snow and ice, sickness, and packing for myself and two kids got in the way.  So here I am again!

A little while ago I found this gorgeous Michael Kors bag at TJMaxx! It was love at first sight…and then my critical eyes found a teeny tiny flaw (so small you barely notice it). I almost didn’t buy it, but after talking with the nice store manager, they gave me a discount along with the amazing TJMaxx price that I couldn’t refuse!  I may seem super picky for even finding something wrong with it, or maybe I am silly to still spend money on something that is flawed (I normally don’t). I like nice things, but our family is sticking to a tight budget (we are hoping to buy a house soon), so for me finding deals and spending my money wisely are essential!  And even with the practically imperceivable imperfection, this bag for the extremely discounted price is worth it to me!

So long story short, don’t be afraid to ask for something.  You’ll never really know what is possible (or how much money you can save!) unless you ask.

{january favorites}

fashion/ favorites/ lifestyle

A little while ago, sweet Leesha of Captivating Femininity tagged me on Instagram to share my January favorites.   I had already shared some of my favorite outfits for the month here, but I thought I could share some other things that I have been loving for the last month or so.

Leopard print.  In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve had a current obsession with leopard print.  It’s super easy to print mix with it, since basically it’s a neutral nowadays.

Hats.  Towards my third (or fourth) day between hair washes, I tend to rock a top knot just so that my long hair isn’t pulled on by my curious ten month old daughter.  Even though top knots can look chic in their own way, I love how I can look just as pulled together when I put on a hat.  The hat pictured above I bought from Forever 21 and I get compliments on it every time I wear it.

Bauble Bar.  For some reason I just barely started purchasing jewelry from Bauble Bar and I have loved everything I’ve gotten!  There is so much variety and plenty of options for whatever kind of look you’re going for.  Those crystal drop earrings I bought on sale and they instantly add sparkle to any outfit.

Yosi Samra flats. These flats have been my feet’s saving grace.  They are super cute and even after running around with kids all day, my feet still feel fine.  My Habit usually has Yosi Samra flats on sale, so if you’re looking to buy a pair but are on a budget I would check there first.  I bought the canvas camouflage ones from there most recently and I hope to get a few more in some spring colors.

PMD Personal Microderm tool.  This was my big Christmas gift from my hubby (at my request), but I finally started using it last month.  I was super excited to get it, but I was a little hesitant to use it at first.  I was paranoid it would irritate my skin to the point of no return, but thankfully I got over that fear and it has been amazing!  I’ve had a constant battle with keratosis pilaris on my arms and legs, and just after one treatment I’ve already seen a huge improvement! I haven’t seen quite as much of a change on my face yet, but it’s only been a few weeks and I think I’ll see more of a difference after a little longer.  Regardless, it’s working on my arms and legs and that alone is worth it (especially come swimsuit season).

Coconut Oil.  This stuff is wonderful! It has so many uses (besides cooking/baking), and it works miracles!  When my daughter was first born, she had baby acne, eczema, AND cradle cap all over her face!  All at once!  She was always scratching her face and it would always be so red and sad looking.  Putting coconut oil on her face cleared it right up and you would never know her skin was so awful.  I’ve been using coconut oil for a while on my face and to shave my legs with, but lately I’ve been putting it on after I use the PMD and I think that it has helped with my skin’s rapid improvement.

EOS lip balm.  I got this set for Christmas, and the scents are beautiful!  I love EOS lip balms because they smell so good, they moisturize my lips well, and the lids twist on and off, which is super helpful when I have toddler hands that somehow find themselves sifting through my things.  I like having a lot of these so that I can always find one.

DoTerra Essential Oils.  I was given lemon, peppermint, and lavender oils a while ago, but I just started using them fairly frequently because I am finally learning about all of their wonderful uses!  I use the lemon oil by dabbing a tiny amount on my babies’ noses when they have runny or stuffy noses and it helps them to breathe.  I also put a drop or two into a glass of water each morning and it helps my immune system and rid the toxins in my body.  And I just started using the lavender oil in my mascara…for real!  Adding a drop of lavender oil to mascara promotes healthy, fuller, and longer lashes.  I’ve learned how to use my oils from Michelle.  I got to know her and her family as they were passing through Georgia, and she is the coolest.  There are so many oils with so many uses, and she has made learning how to use my oils so easy.

Friends TV Show.  Anyone else binge watching this on Netflix right now? My husband and I have seen the series countless times, but we love it and watch it together anyway.

I loved putting this post together, and I might try to do a favorites post each month…and maybe I’ve shared something new that you’ll love too.

Happy Monday!

{the liebster award}

I started Style Savvy Sara just this month, and even though I’ve been blogging on our family blog intermittently for quite some time, I’m brand spanking new to the whole lifestyle/fashion/mama blogging community.   I have wanted to create this little internet space of my own for quite a while, and I’m so glad I did.  Now that I’ve begun, I am blown away by how many inspirational and talented people I have come across in just a short amount of time.  It has been a goal of mine to reach out and meet others, and I am thrilled to share that I have been nominated for the Liebster Award by the lovely Leesha of Captivating Femininity  and Olivia of That’s Lovely (thanks ladies!).
The Liebster Award is given to bloggers (who have 1k followers or less) in recognition by other bloggers. Upon being nominated by a fellow blogger, you:
1st: link to the person who tagged you
2nd: answer the 11 questions in a blog post
3rd: nominate 11 other bloggers
last: notify all the nominees via social media

It’s a fun way to share new blogs with others, and I found so many new (to me) blogs just from being nominated!  I am really excited to pass this little chain mail award on to a few other bloggers and to get to know some of them better!

So, the 11 questions I was given (and that I now give to those I nominated) are below:

1. How did you come up with your blog name?
I wanted a blog name that was personal to me, but that wouldn’t force my blog focus into one specific area.      I am striving to create a space that is uniquely my own which shares my personal style on all sorts of  things.   “Style” is a part of the title because no matter what I do in life I hope to do it with style 🙂 And “savvy” became a part of the title since I love learning (and hopefully sharing) smart and inspiring ideas…whether it’s investing in staple wardrobe pieces, making healthy choices, or discovering life hacks.
2. Why did you start you blog?
I have wanted to create this space of mine for a while for a few different reasons.  Now that I am a mama of two littles, a lot of my time and effort goes into watching over them, taking care of them, and adoring them.  I LOVE being their mama, I would never change that.  Ever.  Sometimes I get stuck in mommy mode and forget that I am more than just their mom.  So this blog helps me “center” myself and gives me an outlet to focus on all sorts of things that I love and enjoy (including but not limited to my children).

Because of this, as I would blog on our family blog I would want to share an outfit, a recipe, or things I’m loving, but it just felt forced and out of place on my family’s blog.  So I created this little separate space of my own for all of that!

3. What do you love most about blogging?
I love the inspiration that blogging gives me.  It motivates me to be creative and to find the beauty in what may seem like repetitive chaos in my life.  Finding and meeting other bloggers that share beautiful and wonderful ideas is also pretty fantastic.
4. What was the most ridiculous but very cool fashion trend you followed?
I don’t consider myself much of a risk taker as far as fashion trends go, but for a while I loved the streaks of bright hair color/chalk!  I was so close to doing it myself, I still think I have the box of temporary purple hair dye in my bathroom drawer…maybe one day I’ll be brave and take the (purple) plunge! That might be more of a beauty trend, and/or not that ridiculous, but it’s one that stood out in my mind…
5. What is one goal you wish to accomplish this year?
I made a few New Year’s resolutions that I posted here that I’m still trying to keep.  In terms of blogging, I don’t really know where this little blog will take me (if anywhere), but it would be pretty awesome to make some blogging buddies as well as possibly collaborate on fun and exciting projects along the way!
6. What is your favorite social media site?
Instagram and Pinterest!  Pretty pictures + visual person = favorite distractions (haha!)
7. If you could travel to only one place this year where would it be and why?
I would LOVE to travel to an exotic beach.  I’m ready for warmer weather, bright blue water, and palm trees.
8. How would you describe your personal style?

I feel like my style depends on what I’m doing and how I feel.  As a mama, typically my style is based on functionality, but I am chronically overdressed for almost any occasion when given the chance.
9. Spring or Fall fashion?
I love Fall fashion.  I am all about layering, scarves, and cozy sweaters.

10. If you could choose one store to shop at for your entire life, which store would you choose?

If I could choose, I would be a Nordy’s girl for life.  But realistically it would probably be Target, haha!
11. What is one fear you would like to conquer?
I would like to conquer my fear of failing.  My heart is terrified to fail at something (or anything really), but my mind knows that I can’t grow or improve as a person, wife, friend, mother, or blogger without a little failure here and there.  So I’m hoping that I embrace my failures as life lessons that I will learn something from.  High risks, high rewards…right??

I am truly grateful to have been welcomed into the blogging community with such a thoughtful gesture and award!  It’s also given me a chance to discover and share with you fellow bloggers that I have known for a while or recently found, all of which are incredibly talented, creative, and inspiring in their own ways!
